Why is my Mac using so much RAM?
Updated · Applies to macOS 14 Sonoma through macOS 27 Golden Gate
Mostly because it's supposed to: macOS fills spare memory with caches and gives it back when apps need it. It's only a problem if memory pressure is yellow or red, or swap keeps growing. That usually comes from a browser with many tabs, an app that's been open for days, or developer tools like containers and dev servers.
It’s usually normal
macOS treats empty memory as wasted memory. It keeps files, fonts, and app data you used recently in RAM so they open instantly next time, and releases that memory as soon as something else needs it. So a Mac that shows 14 GB of 16 GB “used” can be perfectly healthy.
The number that matters is memory pressure (see what memory pressure means). If it’s green, there’s no problem, whatever “used” says.
When it’s a real problem
If pressure is yellow or red, or swap keeps growing, these are the usual causes:
Browsers
Every tab, extension, and embedded video runs in its own process. Forty tabs of web apps can easily take 8 GB or more, spread over dozens of “Helper” processes that each look small in Activity Monitor.
Apps open for days
Some apps grow slowly the longer they run. Chat apps, design tools, and anything built on web technology are common examples. Restarting the app gives the memory back.
Developer tools
Container VMs (Docker, Colima, OrbStack) reserve memory for the virtual machine whether or not your containers need it. Dev servers, language servers, simulators, and file watchers add up quickly, especially ones left running from yesterday.
Memory leaks
Occasionally an app has a bug and its memory climbs without stopping. In Activity Monitor you’ll see one process growing minute after minute. Quit it and check for an update.
What to do
- Check memory pressure in Activity Monitor’s Memory tab.
- Sort by Memory and add up each app’s helpers.
- Quit or restart the biggest one you don’t need right now.
- Stop idle dev servers and container VMs.
- If it’s still red with just your everyday apps open, your work needs more memory than this Mac has.
