Softset Shot
Capture it, mark it up, send it.
Screenshots and screen recordings of an area, a window, or the whole screen, with arrows, boxes, blur, highlights, text, and numbered steps. Copy text from anything on screen. One-time purchase.
Coming soon. Planned price: $19.99 once, with a 14-day free trial.
The problem
A screenshot usually needs a little more before you send it.
An arrow to show where to click, a box around the error, the email address blurred out. macOS can do some of this through Markup, but it takes a few steps each time and it can't pixelate or number steps.
And when the thing you need is text in an image, a video, or an app that won't let you select it, there's no quick way to copy it.
Softset Shot demo
Try the annotation tools on an example screenshot. Everything here runs in this tab.
Capture, mark up, and paste in a few seconds.
Press ⌃⇧4 and drag. The screenshot is on your clipboard, with a thumbnail in the corner: click Annotate to add arrows and blur, drag it straight into a message, or pin it on screen while you work.
Capture
Area, window, or screen
Drag to capture an area of the frozen screen, press Space to pick a window instead, or capture a whole display.
Copy text from the screen
Select any area and Shot copies the text in it, using Apple's on-device text recognition. Works on images, videos, and apps that won't let you select text.
Record the screen
Record an area or a window to MP4, with the Mac's sound if you like, then save it, copy it, or turn it into a GIF.
Timer and repeat
A 3, 5, or 10 second self-timer for menus and hover states, and Capture Previous Area to grab the same spot again.
After the capture
Annotate
Arrows, lines, boxes, ellipses, pencil, highlighter, text, numbered steps, blur, pixelate, spotlight, and crop. Select any mark later to move, resize, or recolour it.
Thumbnail actions
Copy, save, annotate, or pin from the thumbnail in the corner, or drag it into any app as a file.
Pin to screen
Keep a screenshot floating above your windows while you work from it. Double-click to close.
Backgrounds and history
Frame a screenshot on a gradient with padding and rounded corners for sharing, and reopen recent captures from the menu.

Questions about Softset Shot
How is this different from macOS's own screenshots?
macOS's ⇧⌘4 and Markup cover the basics. Shot adds pixelation, numbered steps, and highlighting, copies text from any area of the screen, pins screenshots above your windows, and keeps every action one click from the thumbnail.
Can it record the screen or capture a scrolling page?
It records the screen: an area or a window, to MP4 with optional sound, which you can save as a GIF. Scrolling capture isn't available yet.
Can I use ⇧⌘4 for Shot?
Yes. Turn off macOS's screenshot shortcuts in System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots, then record ⇧⌘4 in Shot's settings.
Where do screenshots go?
To the clipboard by default, with a thumbnail you can save from. You can also have every capture saved to a folder you choose, as PNG or JPEG.
What happens when the trial ends?
After 14 days, capturing stops until you add a license. Screenshots you've saved are yours, in the folder you chose.
