Photo metadata viewer and remover

See what a photo reveals, including where it was taken, and download a copy without it.

What a photo can reveal

Photos from phones and cameras carry EXIF metadata: the camera and lens, the settings, the date and time, and often the exact GPS location where the photo was taken. Share the original file and all of that goes with it.

How this tool removes it

It deletes the metadata blocks from the file (EXIF and XMP, which hold camera, date, and location; IPTC; and comments) and leaves the image data untouched, so there’s no loss of quality. The colour profile is kept so colours look the same.

Doing it on your Mac

  1. In Photos, select the photo, choose File → Export, and turn off Include Location Information.
  2. On iPhone, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location before sharing.
